HeyGilli — Terms of Service
1. Who this agreement is with
HeyGilli is built and operated by an individual developer, not a registered company, reachable at [email protected]. There is no separate legal entity behind it. Using HeyGilli means you accept these terms as they stand today; if you don't agree with them, the only course is not to use the app.
2. Who may use HeyGilli
- You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, and be the parent or legal guardian of any child profile you create.
- A child never creates an account, signs in, or agrees to anything here — every profile, setting, and permission is set up by you.
- You are responsible for what you connect: if you sign in with Google, it must be an account you're authorized to use, typically your household's own.
3. What HeyGilli is — and is not
HeyGilli screens YouTube channels you approve, using an automated system, and keeps a buddy character alongside your child while they watch, asking questions about what's on screen.
The screening is automated and imperfect. Videos are evaluated by an AI system against the rules you set, not reviewed by a person, and it can make mistakes in either direction — approving something you wouldn't have wanted, or holding back something harmless. HeyGilli is a tool that helps you supervise, not a replacement for actually knowing what your child watches. Use it alongside your own judgment, not instead of it.
HeyGilli only ever shows videos from channels you have explicitly approved. It does not browse YouTube on your child's behalf beyond those channels, and your child is never shown a way to search or reach channels you haven't approved (unless you specifically turn that on).
4. Your Google account and YouTube data
If you choose "Continue with Google," you're granting HeyGilli read-only access to your YouTube subscriptions, as described in the Privacy Policy. Our use of that data follows Google's own API Services User Data Policy and YouTube API Services Terms of Service. Your use of YouTube itself, separately from HeyGilli, is governed by YouTube's own Terms of Service.
You can revoke HeyGilli's access to your Google account at any time from myaccount.google.com/permissions, independently of us.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use HeyGilli to access, approve, or attempt to reach content you know violates YouTube's own policies for content aimed at children.
- Attempt to bypass, disable, or interfere with the screening system, the time limits you've set for yourself, or the mechanisms that keep the parent and child sides of the app separate.
- Use another person's Google account, or a household's subscriptions, without their permission.
- Attempt to extract, scrape, or resell data from HeyGilli or through it from YouTube, beyond ordinary use of the app for your own household.
- Use the app in any way that could disable, overburden, or impair how it works for other households, including automated or bulk requests against the service.
6. Cost
HeyGilli does not charge for its use and does not process payments. There is no subscription, and this document does not describe a paid service — if that changes, these terms will be updated first and you will be told what changes before any charge applies to you.
7. Service availability
HeyGilli is an early-stage, actively developed project, currently run on infrastructure that can be slower to respond after a period of inactivity, and can be unavailable, changed, or discontinued at any time, with or without notice. We don't currently commit to a specific uptime or availability level.
8. Account suspension and termination
- You may stop using HeyGilli at any time, simply by no longer using it, and may request deletion of your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
- We may suspend or remove access for a household that we reasonably believe is violating §5 (Acceptable use), attempting to access content unsuitable for children, or otherwise misusing the service or Google's or YouTube's own terms.
- We'll make a reasonable effort to tell you if we suspend or remove your access and why, except where doing so would itself be unsafe or inappropriate (for example, a safety concern involving a child).
9. No warranty
HeyGilli is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its content screening will catch everything you would want it to. As an early-stage project built for a hackathon and under continued development, you should expect rough edges.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer of HeyGilli is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including damages arising from content shown to your child that the screening system failed to catch. Nothing here is meant to limit liability that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you — for example, where a consumer-protection law gives you rights that these terms cannot override, those rights still apply.
11. Changes to these terms
If we make a material change to these terms, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use HeyGilli after a change means you accept the updated terms.
12. Governing law and disputes
Not yet finalized. This project has not yet named a specific governing jurisdiction or dispute-resolution process. Until it does, disagreements are handled directly — email [email protected] and we'll work it out. This section will be completed with a specific jurisdiction before HeyGilli is offered beyond a hackathon demonstration.
